William was born in 1878, the oldest son of Alfred and Sarah who had two other sons and three daughters. The family lived at Station Road, Great Dunham where, in 1901, William, his brothers and father were all farm workers. William married Harriet in 1910 and at the time of the census in 1911 William was still working on the farm. William enlisted in Dereham initially joining the Bedfordshire Regiment. We do not have attestation papers but we know that he transferred at some point into the 10th Battalion of the Essex Regiment. The 10th Battalion were sent to France on 26th July 1915. The Battalion was sent to Picardy they were involved in the Battle of the Somme, from July 1st 1916. The 10th Battalion moved to the Arras area in 1917 and were involved in the Battle of Arras in the spring of that year. It was during this operation that William was wounded. He was brought back to this country and eventually to a hospital in Aberdeen, where he died on the 29th April. His body was brought back to Great Dunham and he is buried in the Churchyard. Harriet had an inscription put on the grave. Unfortunately we can only see part of the first line as the rest has weathered away. The first line says, “A loving husband and a good true son..won..will not complain..again..” Biography written by Ella. |
