6 Pte Arthur Jaggs
22887 7th Norfolk Age: 20 Died: 14-Oct-17 Listed: Great Dunham Remembered: Arras Memorial Son George and May Jaggs of Gt Dunham Biography
Arthur was born in 1897, the youngest son of George and Julia who had two other sons and two daughters. The family lived in Church Farm, Great Dunham where George was the farmer. In 1911 Robert was working for his father on the farm. Arthur joined the Norfolk Regiment, we do not have attestation papers so can only speculate that it must have been in 1915 at the earliest because of his age. He was in the 7th (Service) Battalion. The 7th Battalion trained in Aldershot and were sent to France on May 30th 1915. They were sent to the Ypres area where they served for the next half year. The Battalion was sent to Picardy but they were not involved on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1st 1916. They joined the battle 3 days later and were involved on the Somme until the end of the year. During this time they had many casualties, including nearly one hundred and fifty men who were killed. The 7th Battalion moved to the Arras area in 1917 and were involved in the Battle of Arras in the spring of that year, during which they lost another 150 men. They were still in the area in the autumn. On 14th October they carried out a large scale raid on the German trenches at Pick Cave. It was during this operation that Arthur was killed. His body was not found and he is commemorated on the Arras memorial. Biography written by Edward. |
