Herbert was born in 1882 in Little Dunham, the eldest son of John and Ann. The family was quite large and Herbert had 5 brothers and sisters. In 1901 they were living in Swaffham Road, Little Dunham and Herbert was an agricultural labourer.
Herbert moved to Yorkshire and on 26th December 1907 he married Edith. In 1911 they were still in Yorkshire and Herbert was working as a “striker for a smith.”
Herbert joined the 2nd Royal Scots Regiment and was sent to France on 24th May 1915. The battalion had lost many men in the first Battle of Ypres. They were involved in the Battle of Loos at the end of September and it is probably around this time that Herbert was badly wounded. He was transported back to London and treated at St. John and St. Elizabeth Hospital. It was there that he died from his wounds on 23rd October.
He is buried in Kensal Green (All Souls) Cemetery
