Arthur was born in Great Dunham in 1888, the eldest son of James and Harriet. Census details show that the parents had 7 children, 3 of whom had died by 1911. The family lived on Station Road, Great Dunham and in 1911 Arthur was working as a shepherd. His father was also a shepherd and his two brothers Sidney and Charles were working as labourers.
Arthur had been in the 5th Territorial Norfolk Regiment before the war but had already left the force before the war started. His brother, Charles, was still in the 5th Norfolks and he was one of those who died in Gallipoli. Arthur joined up in Norwich on the 28th February 1916 and was placed in the 8th Battalion of the Royal West Surrey Regiment. Arthur joined up with his Battalion on the Somme on the 26th August. They moved into trenches on the edge of Delville Wood where they were subjected to gas attack and shellfire during the first week of September. Arthur was wounded during this time and was taken to the Casualty Clearing Station at Heilly. He died of wounds there on 7th and is buried in the cemetery, Heilly Station, Mericourt-L’abbe.
